Turning Tides: New Sustainable Bag Brand Takes on Ocean Plastic Pollution

Paris, 15/03/2024 – Addressing the global concern of plastic waste, Collect Paris has announced its official launch, promising not only a functional solution for everyday carry but also a direct answer to the overwhelming plastic pollution affecting our oceans.

Rooted in sustainability and innovation, Collect's debut collection features sling bags & accessories made from recycled ocean plastic, verified by blockchain, each piece echoing the brand's core mission.

"With every bag purchased, customers aren't just choosing quality and functionality. They're taking a stand against environmental degradation and supporting sustainable alternatives," said Benjamin Hamilton, the visionary behind the brand.

Highlights from the Brand’s Journey:

To date, the brand's Ocean Collect Project has successfully removed 10,000kg of plastic waste from the world's oceans, partnering with Waste2Wear’s Ocean Fabric Initiative to transform waste into wearable solutions. Each bag is made from this collected waste.

Beyond addressing environmental concerns, the initiative supports waste pickers and former fishermen in polluted areas, offering them an opportunity to supplement their income and championing community upliftment.

Collect's approach to production is as pioneering as its mission, using 86% less water, 75% less CO2, and 70% less energy than non-recycled fabrics.

The brand’s launch is timely, given the exponential rise in plastic production. "From the deepest ocean to our very lungs, we’re drowning in plastic. Our mission is to turn the tide, one bag at a time," remarked Benjamin Hamilton.

For those eager to join this movement, Collect's bags are now available to order directly on their website. The brand further incentivises community participation with a referral program, empowering customers to advocate for the cause and receive benefits in return.

Press and media inquiries can be directed to Benjamin Hamilton directly.

About us

Who are we

We are Collect Paris, a sustainable bag company founded in 2023 in Paris, aligning with the principles of the circular economy.

What do we do

We specialise in crafting sling bags and accessories from recycled ocean waste, emphasising function and environmental responsibility.

About us & the concept

How we do it

We work with a committed fabric supplier who creates jobs for fishermen who have lost theirs. These fishermen collect marine waste along the Yangtze River and the East China Sea, which we then transform into sustainable materials.

The Ocean Collect Project

Our audience

Our products appeal to urban, environmentally aware consumers who prioritise functionality and sustainability in a circular economy.

Benjamin was inspired by his childhood hikes to create functional bags.

As a teenager, he began making and selling leather goods to his teachers and friends' parents, a passion that led to a diploma at the Institut Français de la Mode.

Over time, he noticed a glaring lack of bags adapted to the fast-paced demands of urban life. This, combined with his commitment to environmental sustainability, led him to create Collect.

The brand focuses on durable, portable products made from recycled waste, aiming to simplify life while preserving the environment.

The Ocean Collect Project: a background

Every 15 years since the 1950s, the amount of plastic manufactured has doubled. This is the most rapid growth of any man-made material.

Only ten rivers contribute 90% of all plastic waste collected in the ocean.

Eight of these rivers are in Asia.

The Yangtze River is China's largest and the world's third-longest river. It sustains over 400 million people and is one of the world's most polluted rivers, responsible for 55% of the waste that ends up in the nearby seas and ocean due to a lack of efficient recycling infrastructure.

That's 1.5 millions tons per year.

We partner with our fabric supplier on their Ocean Fabric Initiative, combating ocean plastic pollution.

Besides removing plastic waste, we support waste pickers and former fishermen in polluted regions, boosting their income.

We also reinforce recycling systems in critical areas, like riverbanks and coastlines, to stop plastic from reaching the ocean.

Our bags are crafted from this collected waste.

From pollution, to solution...

A 6-step process.

A team of fishermen and volunteers embark on a mission to collect plastic waste from the Yangtze River and the East China Sea shorelines.

The collected plastic is taken to a facility where machines sort it by type, colour, and origin for specialised processing.

The goal of this step is to remove impurities and everything that is not made from plastic.

Resizing involves shredding plastic into small particles for easier processing and reshaping, also allowing a final check to remove any remaining non-plastic contaminants.

Compounding is when the small particles are crushed and melted together into plastic pellets. The pellets can then be used in the production of our ocean waste fabric.

The dry pellets are melted and pushed through tiny holes to form fine filaments, which are then cooled, tangled, and stretched to create a yarn ready to be woven into fabric.

The production of our ocean waste fabric uses:

86% less water

Than non-recycled fabrics.

75% less CO2

Than non-recycled fabrics.

70% less energy

Than non-recycled fabrics.

Our blockchain technology, implemented by Waste2Wear, verifies the source, journey, and environmental impact of the waste in our products. It ensures the use of recycled ocean plastic and authenticates our product's sustainability.
